Portmeirion Christmas Lunch

This Christmas we also managed to enjoy a festive lunch at the Portmeirion Hotel which is worth a mention.

The hotel is a different experience to the gastro pub Castell Deudreath - it is a cosy and classic choice for a stylish good value lunch.

Our Christmas lunch began with a starter salad of black pudding and poached egg, potatoes and golden raisins that was flavoursome without being too rich. We then opted for the mains fillet of sea bass, roasted fennel, peppers, baby potatoes and salse verde a wonderful change from the more traditional turkey and accompaniments also on offer. For pudding I chose the dark chocolate tart with chestnut ice cream and caramel sauce, a well balanced and grown up dessert, beautifully presented. My partner had the Portmeirion Christmas pudding with brandy sauce – a light moist pudding bursting with fruit.

Meanwhile our youngster was happy with the children’s menu – sausages and mash with onion gravy, followed by two varieties of ice cream.

Also included in the price was a complimentary glass of mulled wine for the adults, festive crackers at the table, and coffee and mince pies to finish the meal, which we enjoyed in the hotel lounge overlooking the estuary just as the day turned to twilight.

The service was friendly and attentive, welcoming and child friendly. It was a lovely relaxed experience – there is plenty of space between tables in the dining room and there was no hurrying us through. This was good as we take our time over food! It was quite dark and atmospheric by the time we happily wended our way back through the spotlit village.

The cost of lunch includes admission to the village so on a bright sunny day your can explore the grounds too before it gets dark

Recommended as a festive treat for next year...

If you wish to visit the village off season, entry is only £1 per adult if you print out the voucher available at the official website. Currently there are also winter blues special offers if you wish to stay at the hotel (bed and breakfast for two people from £119) up until 1 March, which includes an allowance of £25 per person towards dinner at the hotel.
