CYPRUS
Now the
Christmas decorations are down and the wild winter weather holds sway here in
the UK it is time to plan summer holidays and recall our
last holiday in sun drenched Cyprus .
We visited
Paphos for a week of heat and sunshine.
We swam, explored the rich and extensive archeological sites (which
contained fantastic Greco Roman mosaics) and of course we ate!
The food as
always in the Mediterranean was impressive – fresh honeydew and
water melons, honey and grapes and the silky Greek yoghurt, plus the dense
halloumi cheese all made for lovely breakfasts.
We usually enjoyed a freshly made omelette too!
It was
interesting to see banana plantations on Cyprus .
The small fruits were protected by blue plastic sacs while we were there
and we did not manage to taste the ripened fruit.
The
restaurants at Paphos harbour had a great array of fresh fish and shell fish on
offer. Also we enjoyed some local frozen
yoghurt in refreshing flavours such as mango rose and blueberry in a little
harbour café close to the castle.
Our hotel,
the Amphorae, provided some great evening meals. A delicious soup for starters (French onion
was outstanding) followed by a carvery accompanied by a variety of
well-seasoned vegetables was the usual main course (fish often a tempting
alternative).
The
highlight was a sumptuous feast of the classic Lamb Kleftiko. Historically the traditional dish developed
from the habit of Greek bandits to steal sheep which they then slow cooked in a
buried pit so that no smoke or flame betrayed their hideout. This version provided generous amounts of
lamb slow cooked on the bone and lightly seasoned which proved incredibly
tender and flavourful.
We were
treated to some indulgent desserts that were high patisserie – gateau which
contained thin slices of feather light sponge interlaced with layers of fruit
and fresh whipped cream. Even the
chocolate cake was light, the ganache not too rich, so totally irresistible to
a chocoholic even at temperatures of 30 degree Celsius!
The hotel
was brand new, stylish and well-appointed with a great swimming pool and a
private beach to swim from too.
Recommended for a relaxing and restorative holiday.
