Summer revisited

Now Autumn is well and truly here it is good to recall our brief taste of the Mediterranean this year during our visit to Kos.  We enjoyed the unique history, the open air swimming and the food!
It’s a particular joy to broaden our child’s tastes with the flavours she experienced.  Of course she enjoyed the sweet treats like ice cream (banana flavour was her favour) jelly (kept cool over a tray of ice cubes) and dream topping sprinkled with hundreds and thousands – far too sweet for adult tastes!  But she also loved the local water melon, returning for more slices of its delicate pink flesh, the slightly sweet juiciness so refreshing, at breakfast or after the evening meal.
The plentiful tomatoes, so fresh and fragrant, were also a favourite at breakfast.  Their sweet juiciness contrasted well with the savoury of feta cheese and the hard boiled eggs, which were served in a tray of catering salt so that they looked like pebbles on the beach.
Currently she is only a fan of the tenderest meat (gaps in teeth make this understandable) but she liked the flavour of the local Kebabs, souvlaki available in chicken pork or lamb (lamb was our favourite).
We visited the Agora (covered market) in Kos town and bought some souvlaki mix to take home, as well as some firm figs we could wash under their tap and sample straight away.
As always, it was wonderful to see the abundance of crops such as aubergine, grapes, lemons and figs ripening in the August sunshine – culinary inspiration in itself.  And the olive, lemon and fig trees are a marvel to us after the wet indifferent British summer!
We aim to keep the essence of the cuisine going at home, even if it is only in small things such as the use of good olive oil.  We often have a tomato side salad and bowl of olives to accompany cold meats and cheeses, or honey and Greek yoghurt as a sunny (and healthy) dessert to remind us of Kos.  Now that pomegranates are in season it’s good to serve these mixed with Greek yoghurt too.
Food From Many Greek Kitchens by Tessa Kiros is a book lush with photographs of Greek cuisine and contains many traditional recipes such as baked butter beans which is a good reference for further exploration of this tasty and healthy cuisine…
